Understanding the numbers

Your relocation budget is the total of all one-time costs to physically move back home and get settled through the first 90 days. It's separate from your ongoing monthly expenses (which belong in the Cost-of-Living Comparison calculator) and separate from your emergency fund (which is your buffer against things going wrong).

Most diaspora severely underestimate this number. The "sticker" flight cost is often just 15-25% of the total — the rest is shipping, paperwork, deposits, and the gap-fill items like buying a fridge, paying first/last/deposit on a rental, or enrolling kids in school mid-term.

What realistic totals look like

  • $5K - $10K: Single person, minimal shipping, going back to family home
  • $10K - $20K: Couple, partial shipping container, renting a place
  • $20K - $40K: Family of 4, full shipping container, school enrollment
  • $40K+: Large family, vehicle import, premium furnished setup

These are real numbers from real diaspora — not hypothetical. If your total is below $5K, you're probably forgetting something. The most commonly forgotten items are: document authentication (apostille fees add up fast), temp housing for the 4-8 weeks before your long-term rental is ready, and the school enrollment fees that hit mid-academic-year.

How to use this number

Once you know your relocation budget, divide it by your monthly savings (from the Savings Rate calculator) to know how many months of dedicated saving it will take to fund. Then add 20% as a buffer — because something always costs more than expected. This total should also flow into your Stay or Go readiness score as one of the 8 dimensions.
