When Can I Actually Afford to Go Back? I Did the Math.

Binary search, compound interest, inflation-adjusted targets. Here's how the Return Timeline calculator actually works.

When Can I Actually Afford to Go Back? I Did the Math.

The Return Timeline calculator is the centerpiece of the entire Leverage Abroad platform. It's the one that answers the question every diaspora is actually asking: 'When can I go home?'

Most financial calculators project forward — 'if you save $X/month for Y years at Z% return, you'll have $N.' That's useful, but it answers the wrong question. The question isn't 'how much will I have?' The question is 'when will I have enough?'

The Return Timeline calculator flips the calculation. You tell it your target nest egg, your current savings, your monthly contributions, and your expected returns. It finds the exact month when you'll hit your target — accounting for investment growth AND inflation eroding your target's real value.

How It Works (Behind the Scenes)

The calculator uses a binary search algorithm. It tests different month numbers — 12, 24, 36, 48 — and checks whether your projected savings (with compound growth) exceeds your inflation-adjusted target at that point. Then it narrows the search until it finds the exact month.

Here's what happens month by month in the simulation:

  • Your current savings grow by the monthly investment return (e.g., 7% annual = ~0.58%/month)
  • Your monthly contribution is added (and grows annually if you've set contribution growth)
  • Your target nest egg is inflated by the annual inflation rate (e.g., 3%)
  • The calculator checks: does projected savings ≥ inflated target?
  • If yes, it narrows the search to find the earliest month this becomes true

The Three Personas — Compared

I ran the Return Timeline calculator with three diaspora personas to see how their timelines differ:

The differences are stark. The $2K diaspora needs 14 years — unless they either increase income, reduce their target, or both. The $8K diaspora can return in just over 3 years. Same calculator, same formula, wildly different outcomes based on savings rate and target.

This is why I always say: the rate, not the amount, determines your timeline. Two people with different incomes but the same savings rate progress at the same pace.

The Milestone Timeline

One of the most motivating features of the calculator is the milestone timeline. It shows you when you'll hit 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% of your target — with projected dates. For the $4K diaspora (6.6 year timeline), the milestones look like:

Those dates make the abstract concrete. Instead of 'someday,' you have April 2028 for your first quarter, June 2032 for your finish line. You can plan around those dates.

And here's the thing: once you have dates, you have a plan. Once you have a plan, you have momentum. Once you have momentum, the return stops being a dream and starts being a project with milestones.

Run the Return Timeline calculator yourself. Find your dates. Then start counting down.
